Today i needed to show an email that i’ve recently viewed in one of my mailboxes. I was completely unable to find it, and it was really annoying. I hoped there is a smart mailbox rule for this situation. And the good news is, there is one! How could i live without this before?

So here it is, how can you create a mailbox for the recently viewed emails:

It’s pretty easy. Just create a new Smart Mailbox from the “Mailbox” menu, give a name like Recently Viewed, and choose the condition “Date Last Viewed”. The rest is up to you. I chose “is in the last 3 Days”, it should  be enough for me, but of course you can select whatever you want, or add some plus condition like specifing a mailbox or something.

New Smart Mailbox

That’s why we love the mac.

I’ve tried using the “Date Last Viewed” in a smart mailbox and it just isn’t reliable. For dates before 8/5/08 I get about two dozen hits while it should list hundreds. For July alone, it shows 12 emails. Heck, I view twice that number and more each day, and these are emails that I keep in various mailboxes.

it works perfectly for me with the 3-day-setup. maybe it’s not that reliable (as you said) for longer terms. i hope someday apple will improve this option. i think it’s a very good feature in mail.

I tried “is in the last three days” and it only listed 2 emails from two days ago. So I found three emails from today that were in a particular mailbox. I edited the smart mailbox by adding “Message is in mailbox” and listed that box. No emails appeared. Then I removed the “Date last viewed” and got all the emails in that mailbox.

Very strange behavior. I had posted the “date last viewed” problem in another forum a few days ago, and had someone else verify that they had the same problem. I’m wondering if this bug (and I will call it a bug) has to do with using MailTags. That’s an add-on to Mac Mail.
